North and South Korea Agree to Jointly March Under Unification Flag in Winter Olympics

18 January 2018 Current Affairs: North and South Korea have agreed to march together under a single unified Korea flag at Winter Olympics in the South.

They also agreed to field a joint women’s ice hockey team after rare talks at the truce village of Panmunjom.

These are the first high-level talks between the two Koreas in more than two years.

The Games will take place in February 2018 in Pyeongchang in South Korea.

India Test-Fires Nuclear-Capable ICBM Agni-V

18 January 2018 Current Affairs: India test-fired its nuclear-capable Agni-V inter-continental ballistic missile (ICBM), which has a strike range of over 5,000km.

The ICBM can reach the northern-most parts of China. Agni-V was last tested in December 2016, in what was described as the fourth and final experimental test of the three-stage ICBM.

Bank of Baroda Partners with Invoicemart as a TReDS Partner

18 January 2018 Current Affairs: Digital invoice discounting marketplace – Invoicemart has tied up with state-run lender Bank of Baroda to discount invoices for MSMEs.

Buyers and sellers registered in the marketplace will now be able to access funding from Bank of Baroda.

Invoicemart is a joint venture between Axis Bank Ltd and junction services ltd. Bank of Baroda had recently announced that it was stepping up its focus on supply chain financing.

TReDS is an online mechanism that helps MSMEs unlock working capital without the hassle of applying for loans.

India Attends its 1st SCO Military Cooperation Meeting in Beijing

18 January 2018 Current Affairs: India took part in a two-day meeting of the international military cooperation departments of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) in Beijing, China.

An Indian delegation was led by Major General Ajay Seth. The meeting discussed issues of practical cooperation among SCO nations.

This is the first meeting attended by India in the field of defense cooperation under the SCO framework.

India and Pakistan were admitted in 2017 into the grouping in which China plays an influential role.

Odisha CM Launches Mukhyamantri Kalakar Sahayata Yojana

18 January 2018 Current Affairs: Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik launched the ‘Mukhyamantri Kalakar Sahayata Jojana’ (MMKSJ) – an assistance scheme for Artists in the state. Around 50,000 artists will be benefited from this.

The Union Government decided to give Rs 1,200 per month as artist assistance.

The CM confirmed that the government has also changed the eligibility criteria for availing MMKSJ. Under the new scheme, a male artist can avail assistance after attaining the age of 50 years instead of the existing 60 years.

The age criteria for female artists have been reduced to 40 years from 50 years.

Actor Sudhir Dalvi Gets Janakavi P Sawlaram Award

The award is jointly given by the Thane Municipal Corporation and the Janakavi P Savlaram Kala Samiti.

Mr. Dalvi featured on the famous TV show “Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi” and other Hindi serials.

Vijay Kumar appointed as MD and CEO of NCDEX

18 January 2018 Current Affairs: Market regulator The Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) approved the appointment of Vijay Kumar as Managing Director and CEO of the country’s largest agri-commodity bourse NCDEX.

Mr. Kumar is a former chief business officer at NCDEX.

The exchange’s selection committee had picked his name for the MD and CEO’s post from a list of 11 candidates.

India and Sri Lanka Sign 4 Agreements for Collaboration in ICT Sector

18 January 2018 Current Affairs: India and Sri Lanka signed four agreements for collaboration in the Information and communication technology (ICT) sector, setting up of an e-office system and connecting of National Knowledge Network (NKN) for collaboration among universities and academics.

With the move, Sri Lanka has become the first country to be connected to India’s NKN through a Gigabyte optical fiber network.

The MoU for cooperation was signed by Union minister for Information Technology Ravi Shankar Prasad with his Sri Lankan counterpart, during his visit to Colombo.

Ministry of Petroleum Launches Saksham 2018 Campaign

18 January 2018 Current Affairs: Saksham (Sanrakshan Kshamta Mahotsav) is an annual flagship event of Petroleum Conservation Research Association (PCRA) under the aegis of Ministry of Petroleum & Natural Gas, Govt. of India.

The event focuses on the active involvement of the Oil & Gas PSUs along with other stakeholders like State Governments, for creating focused attention on fuel conservation through people-centric activities.

The month-long campaign aims to intensify efforts for making citizens aware of the conservation and effective utilization of petroleum products.

IWDRI-2018 Concluded Successfully in New Delhi

18 January 2018 Current Affairs: The two-day International Workshop on Disaster Resilient Infrastructure (IWDRI)successfully concluded in New Delhi.

It had set the stage for taking the dialogue on resilient infrastructure forward at the global level.

The Workshop was organized by the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) jointly with United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNISDR). MoS (Home) Shri Kiren Rijiju delivered the Valedictory Address. The workshop was inaugurated by the Union Home Minister Shri Rajnath Singh.
